founders, and I had a reaction that might surprise you: none of this is new.</p><p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong &#8212; what Alpha School is doing is arguably impressive. SAT averages of 1535 for seniors. Kids who&#8217;d reportedly rather go to school than vacation. A two-hour academic day that outperforms six hours of traditional instruction. These are remarkable results.</p><p>But as someone who has spent a career in competitive debate, I couldn&#8217;t stop thinking one thing the entire episode: <strong>debate coaches figured all of this out a long time ago.</strong></p><p>Every &#8220;radical&#8221; principle Alpha School is built on &#8212; mastery-based progression, coaching over lecturing, intrinsic motivation, studying film, the zone of proximal development, rewarding results over seat time, 10x accelerated learning, afternoon life skills development &#8212; have been essential elements of &#8220;learning science&#8221; for years. They&#8217;re the lived reality of every competitive debate program in America. They have been for generations.</p><p>And the fact that these ideas are treated as revolutionary when packaged in a Silicon Valley school model, while debate programs struggle for funding and recognition in those same schools, tells you everything you need to know about why education reform is so hard.</p><p>Let me walk you through it.</p><div><hr></div><h2><strong>1. Put in the Work</strong></h2><p>At Alpha School, student success isn&#8217;t measured in Carnegie Units &#8212; the century-old system of awarding credit based on hours spent in a classroom. Nobody cares how long you sat at a desk. What matters is whether you actually mastered the material. Did you learn it or didn&#8217;t you? Alpha&#8217;s &#8220;Timeback&#8221; software makes this concrete: it shows each student where they are on the path to mastery and what effort it will take to get there. Joe Lamont describes the mindset shift this creates: it moves students from &#8220;I&#8217;m not smart enough&#8221; &#8212; which is debilitating &#8212; to &#8220;I need to put in more effort&#8221; &#8212; which is empowering. When mastery is the goal, not time served, every student can see a path forward.</p><p>Every debater already lives this. In debate, nobody asks how many hours you logged. They ask whether you won. They ask whether your arguments held up under cross-examination and rebuttal. They ask whether you broke to elimination rounds. The measurement is mastery &#8212; of the evidence, of the arguments, of the skills &#8212; and every debater knows that the path to mastery runs through effort. The debaters who put in the work on research, drilling, and practice rounds are the ones who rise. The ones who don&#8217;t, stall. The activity teaches you, viscerally and repeatedly, that effort and mastery are the variables that matter. Not how many hours you sat in a room. Not how many classes you attended. Whether you actually got better. That&#8217;s the only thing that counts, and every debater knows it in their bones.</p><h2><strong>2. Coaches, Not Teachers</strong></h2><p>Alpha School&#8217;s second pillar is transforming the role of the adult. They don&#8217;t have &#8220;teachers&#8221; &#8212; they have &#8220;guides&#8221; whose job is motivational and emotional support, holding kids to high standards while providing high support. They draw from Dr. David Yeager&#8217;s &#8220;mentor mindset&#8221; framework. Half their guides come from coaching backgrounds &#8212; former athletes, NBA assistant coaches, Olympians &#8212; because, as McKenzie Price puts it, &#8220;think about how much motivation and life skill development is taught through sports.&#8221;</p><p>This is literally the job description of a debate coach. Debate coaches don&#8217;t stand at the front of a room and lecture. They sit with students, review arguments, challenge thinking, push kids to go deeper. They are mentors. They motivate. They hold high standards (&#8221;that argument won&#8217;t survive cross-examination&#8221;) and provide high support (&#8221;here&#8217;s how we fix it together&#8221;). Learning Has to Be Enjoyable</strong></h2><p>Alpha School&#8217;s third and most &#8220;radical&#8221; principle: kids must love school. They measure it. They claim over 90% of their students love school. 40-60% say they&#8217;d rather go to school than go on vacation. Two-thirds of their high schoolers asked to skip summer break.</p><p>Debate kids do this voluntarily. They show up on weekends. They travel to tournaments during breaks. They spend their summers at debate camp. Nobody forces them. They do it because debate is genuinely engaging &#8212; it&#8217;s competitive, social, intellectually stimulating, and fun. The &#8220;radical&#8221; idea that learning should be enjoyable is just... Tuesday in a debate program. The kids who excel at debate love it, and they love it because it challenges them in ways that traditional classrooms never do.</p><h2><strong>4. Study Film</strong></h2><p>The podcast draws a direct parallel to sports coaching: &#8220;Think about how much time is spent studying game film to see how you can improve. And that&#8217;s never been done when it comes to learning in academics.&#8221;</p><p>Except it has &#8212; in debate. Competitive debaters have studied recordings of rounds for decades. They watch their own performances to identify weak arguments, bad habits in cross-examination, and unclear explanations. They watch top debaters to learn new techniques. Coaches review rounds with students the way a basketball coach reviews game tape. This feedback loop &#8212; perform, review, adjust, perform again &#8212; is foundational to how debaters improve. Alpha School acts as though applying this to education is a breakthrough. In debate, it&#8217;s been standard practice since long before anyone had a vision model watching a screen.</p><h2><strong>5. You Don&#8217;t Move On Until You&#8217;re Ready</strong></h2><p>Alpha School uses mastery-based progression. The Zone of Proximal Development</strong></h2><p>McKenzie Price describes Alpha&#8217;s approach to difficulty: &#8220;They&#8217;re in what we call the zone of proximal development where the lessons they&#8217;re getting aren&#8217;t too hard that they turn off and not so easy that they&#8217;re bored and disengaged.&#8221; Joe adds precision: the AI targets 80-85% accuracy. Below 66%, kids disengage. At 99%, they&#8217;re not learning.</p><p>Debate tournaments have operationalized this for as long as they&#8217;ve existed. It&#8217;s called power-matching. After preliminary rounds, teams with the same record debate each other. The 2-0 teams face 2-0 teams. The 1-1 teams face 1-1 teams. This isn&#8217;t accidental &#8212; it&#8217;s a deliberate design to ensure that every round is competitive, that every team faces an opponent calibrated to their current ability level. Too easy and you learn nothing. Too hard and you shut down. Debate&#8217;s bracketing system is the zone of proximal development made into a tournament structure. No algorithm needed.</p><h2><strong>7. Rewarded for Success, Not Time on Task</strong></h2><p>Alpha School flips the traditional model. Instead of starting at 100% and losing points for mistakes (the traditional grading model), students start at zero and build up &#8212; like a video game. They earn &#8220;Alpha currency&#8221; for hitting goals. The unit of measure is XP &#8212; one minute of focused learning. The system rewards what you accomplish, not how long you sit in a chair.</p><p>Debate has always worked this way. You don&#8217;t get a trophy for showing up to practice. You get recognition for winning rounds, for earning speaker points, for advancing in tournaments. Your ranking reflects your results, not your attendance. A debater who puts in 10 focused hours and wins a tournament is recognized over one who spent 40 unfocused hours. The incentive structure rewards output and mastery, never mere presence.</p><h2><strong>8. 10x Learning &#8212; Reading and Processing at a Graduate Level</strong></h2><p>Alpha School claims their students learn 10 times faster than traditional students. Joe Lamont frames it as the product of personalized AI tutoring, mastery-based progression, and focused engagement. The results back it up: freshmen scoring 1410 on the SAT, seniors averaging 1535.</p><p>Debaters have been learning at this accelerated rate without any platform at all. A serious high school debater reads more in a single season than most students read in four years of high school &#8212; and they&#8217;re not reading textbooks. They&#8217;re reading journal articles, policy papers, philosophical treatises, and analyses from Foreign Affairs, the Brookings Institution, and academic presses. They read hundreds of articles on a single topic, synthesize competing perspectives, and extract the arguments that matter. It&#8217;s not uncommon for a 15-year-old debater to be fluent in graduate-level literature on nuclear deterrence, health care economics, or constitutional law. They don&#8217;t do this because someone assigned it. They do it because the competition demands it, and the intrinsic motivation of the activity drives them to go deeper. The &#8220;10x learning&#8221; Alpha School celebrates is just what happens when a motivated student engages with challenging material in a structured, competitive environment. Debate has been producing that outcome for a century.</p><h2><strong>9. Life Skills All Afternoon &#8212; Communication and Collaboration</strong></h2><p>Alpha School devotes the entire afternoon to &#8220;life skills workshops&#8221; &#8212; leadership, teamwork, storytelling, public speaking, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, socialization, and grit. McKenzie Price describes kids running food trucks, producing Broadway musicals, building apps, and delivering TED talks. The argument is that academics alone aren&#8217;t enough; students need these broader capacities to thrive.</p><p>Debate is, in many ways, all of these afternoon workshops rolled into one activity. Public speaking? That&#8217;s every round. Storytelling? Framing a persuasive narrative is the core skill. Teamwork and collaboration? Partner debate formats require constant coordination, and even in individual events, squads research together, share strategies, and build each other up. Leadership? Senior debaters mentor younger ones, captain teams, and organize practice. Grit? Try losing a close elimination round and then coming back the next tournament ready to compete again. The life skills Alpha teaches in separate workshops are the same skills debate teaches simultaneously, embedded in the activity itself. Instead, they coach students on &#8220;learning how to learn.&#8221; Students engage actively with material, get immediate feedback, and develop self-driven learning habits.</p><p>Debate is perhaps the purest form of active learning in all of education. You don&#8217;t sit and absorb. You research, construct arguments, anticipate counterarguments, present under pressure, respond in real-time to challenges, and adapt on the fly. Every round is a performance. Every tournament is an assessment. The learning happens through doing, not through listening. Students who excel in debate are students who excel at active learning &#8212; and the activity itself trains that capacity.</p><h2><strong>11. Individualized Learning Paths</strong></h2><p>One of Alpha School&#8217;s marquee features is truly personalized learning. Two seven-year-olds can sit side by side &#8212; one doing algebra, the other working on multiplication tables &#8212; each progressing at their own pace through material calibrated to exactly where they are. No one is held back because the class isn&#8217;t ready. No one is dragged forward before they&#8217;ve mastered the basics. Every student&#8217;s path is their own.</p><p>Debate has always worked this way. No two debaters have the same journey. Some spend more time on research, others on delivery. The paths are as varied as the students themselves. And critically, no coach forces a debater down a path that doesn&#8217;t fit. Alpha School had to spend $100 million building a platform to approximate what a good debate coach does with a legal pad and a stopwatch after every round.</p><h2><strong>So Why Isn&#8217;t Debate the Model?</strong></h2><p>Here&#8217;s what frustrates me. Alpha School is getting &#8212; deservedly &#8212; enormous attention. A thousand people showed up to their New York info session. They&#8217;re featured on major podcasts as pioneers of a new educational paradigm.</p><p>And yet these same principles have been operating in debate programs across the country for over a hundred years, largely ignored by the broader educational establishment. Debate programs get their budgets cut. They&#8217;re treated as extracurriculars &#8212; nice to have, not essential. the debate universe. In Policy and Lincoln-Douglas debate &#8212; at least on the national circuit &#8212; judging has become remarkably standardized. Judges post paradigms. They disclose their decisions and explain their reasoning. They&#8217;ve debated themselves, coached for years, and internalized a shared set of norms about what counts as a good argument, how evidence should be evaluated, and what wins rounds.</p><p>Those norms shift over time, of course. What would have been considered absurd in Policy debate thirty years ago &#8212;  critical theory, politic disadvantages, &#8220;wipeout&#8221; &#8212; is now part of the accepted landscape. But the key point is that at any given moment, there is a broadly shared rubric. Debaters can study their judges, predict what will work, and adapt accordingly. If a judge is truly outside the norm, you can often strike them. The system self-corrects toward consistency.</p><p>This doesn&#8217;t mean circuit debate is free of frustration. Decisions still feel wrong sometimes. Judges still miss arguments or weigh things in unexpected ways. But there&#8217;s a structure &#8212; a <strong>grammar of evaluation</strong> &#8212; that makes the activity broadly predictable. You&#8217;re competing against a rubric. It&#8217;s messier than a classroom rubric, sure, but it&#8217;s a rubric nonetheless.</p><p>Think of it as a well-defined game. The event was designed, in part, to be accessible &#8212; to bring debate to communities where trained judges are scarce and to make the activity legible to everyday people. The result is an event where your judge might be a retired engineer, a high school English teacher, a parent who&#8217;s never watched a debate round before, or a college student earning volunteer hours.</p><p>These judges don&#8217;t share a paradigm. Some want big-picture storytelling. Others want granular evidence comparison. Some are persuaded by delivery and presence. Others fixate on a single argument that resonates with their personal experience. Some penalize speed. Some reward it. There&#8217;s no paradigm page to consult, no track record to study. You walk into the round and face genuine uncertainty about what this particular human being will find convincing.</p><p>And here&#8217;s what debaters rarely acknowledge, even though it&#8217;s the most important part: that judge is a whole person who walked into the room carrying an entire life with them. Maybe they had a terrible day at work. Maybe they just got off the phone with their kid&#8217;s school. Maybe they saw something on TikTok that morning that shifted how they think about the topic you&#8217;re debating. Maybe their own child lost a round yesterday to an argument just like yours, and they&#8217;ve already decided, unconsciously, that it&#8217;s a bad argument. Maybe they&#8217;re a small business owner who thinks about economic policy through the lens of their own payroll, not your Brookings Institution card. Maybe they believe deeply that young people should be able to explain things simply, because that&#8217;s what mattered in their career. Maybe they&#8217;re just tired.</p><p>This is not a flaw in the system. This is <em>reality</em>. This is what it means to communicate with another human being. Every person you&#8217;ll ever try to persuade &#8212; in any context, for the rest of your life &#8212; will be carrying this kind of invisible baggage into the conversation. The lay judge isn&#8217;t failing to be objective. The lay judge is being a person.</p><p>Debaters find this maddening, and understandably so. You can&#8217;t prepare for randomness. You can&#8217;t optimize for a rubric that doesn&#8217;t exist. And when you lose to a team that, by any technical measure, debated worse than you did &#8212; but happened to connect with the judge in some intangible way &#8212; it feels like the activity is broken.</p><p>Some students learn to exploit the messiness. They develop a knack for reading the room, adjusting their style mid-round, simplifying complex arguments without losing their substance, making eye contact, telling stories, finding the thing that makes <em>this particular person</em> nod along. Other students resent having to do any of this. They want the game to be about the arguments. They want it to be fair.</p><p>I get it. You are dealing with a human being who cannot fully articulate what they need, whose emotions shift without warning, who can be brilliant and irrational in the same sentence. You learn to read faces, to hear what&#8217;s not being said, to figure out whether the tantrum is about the thing they&#8217;re screaming about or something else entirely. You make decisions with incomplete information every single day. You negotiate, you persuade, you de-escalate &#8212; not with evidence cards and impact calculus, but with patience, intuition, and the hard-won knowledge that logic alone almost never works on a real person.</p><p>A parent judge who votes on &#8220;who explained it better&#8221; or &#8220;who seemed more genuine&#8221; isn&#8217;t being lazy. They&#8217;re applying a lifetime of experience in figuring out when someone actually understands what they&#8217;re talking about versus when someone is performing understanding. They&#8217;ve spent years sorting through their kid&#8217;s excuses, their coworker&#8217;s office politics, their family&#8217;s holiday arguments. They are, in a very real sense, experts in the thing that matters most: reading people.</p><p>So the next time you see &#8220;parent judge&#8221; on your ballot and groan, consider the possibility that this person isn&#8217;t less qualified to judge you. It will only get better.</p><p>The well-defined game &#8212; the one with clear rules, shared norms, and predictable evaluation &#8212; is precisely the kind of game AI is built to win. If debate were purely about who can assemble the best evidence, construct the tightest logic, and execute the most technically proficient strategy, then machines would eventually outperform humans at it. The rubric is legible. The optimization target is clear. That&#8217;s what machines do.</p><p>And this isn&#8217;t just about debate. It&#8217;s about every professional domain that relies on mastering a defined body of knowledge and applying it according to established rules. Legal research. Financial analysis. Medical diagnosis. Software engineering. These are all areas where AI is already demonstrating remarkable &#8212; and rapidly improving &#8212; capability. A lawyer who wins cases purely because she&#8217;s memorized more precedent than her opponent is in trouble. A financial analyst whose edge is reading quarterly reports faster than the next person is in trouble. <strong>The machines are coming for the rubric.</strong></p><p>Consider what&#8217;s already happening in debate itself. AI tools can cut cards in seconds. They can generate blocks to common arguments, identify logical fallacies, and produce case outlines on any topic. The technical, content-heavy work that used to take debaters hours of prep is becoming trivially easy. If the game is about who has the best evidence and the most airtight logic, AI is already a formidable competitor &#8212; and it&#8217;s only going to get better.</p><p>The content is getting commoditized. The knowledge is becoming accessible to anyone with a prompt. Or rather, everything the lay judge represents.</p><p>The lay judge is a stand-in for every human being you&#8217;ll ever need to persuade who doesn&#8217;t share your framework, hasn&#8217;t read your research, doesn&#8217;t care about your jargon, and evaluates your argument through the lens of their own experience, emotions, values, and biases. That&#8217;s your future boss. Your client. Your voter. Your neighbor at a town hall meeting. Your co-parent at a school board hearing.</p><p>These people aren&#8217;t following a rubric. They&#8217;re being <em>human</em>. And navigating that &#8212; figuring out what matters to someone whose perspective is different from yours, finding language that bridges the gap between your expertise and their understanding, being persuasive without being condescending, reading the room and adjusting in real time &#8212; that is a profoundly human skill that will be needed in human-to-human relations, even if AI can do it.</p><p>Think about what the best Public Forum debaters actually do when they face a lay judge. They don&#8217;t just simplify their arguments &#8212; they <em>listen</em>. They watch the judge&#8217;s face during crossfire. They notice when a point lands and when eyes glaze over. They sense when the judge cares about fairness versus efficiency, about human stories versus statistical evidence. And they adjust, in real time, not because they&#8217;ve been programmed to, but because they&#8217;re doing something deeply human: they&#8217;re trying to understand another person.</p><p>No matter how sophisticated AI becomes, it won&#8217;t replicate what happens when two people are genuinely trying to understand each other &#8212; when persuasion isn&#8217;t a technique but a relationship, however brief.</p><p>Here&#8217;s the thing that gets lost in all the anxiety about AI: no matter how intelligent machines become, human society will still be organized around humans. Squirrel societies are organized around squirrels. Ant colonies are organized around ants. And human communities, workplaces, families, governments, and markets will continue to be organized around human beings &#8212; with all their messiness, irrationality, and emotional complexity. AI will be a tool within that world, an extraordinarily powerful one, but the relationships that matter &#8212; the ones that determine who gets hired, who gets trusted, who gets followed, who gets elected, whose idea gets adopted &#8212; those will remain human-to-human.</p><p>The question isn&#8217;t whether AI will make humans obsolete. It won&#8217;t. The question is what will distinguish one person from another in a world where everyone has access to the same AI-powered knowledge and analysis. And the answer isn&#8217;t more knowledge or better analysis. <strong>The answer is who can do the most with the irreducible messiness of human connection</strong>. Who can walk into a room full of people who don&#8217;t think like them, don&#8217;t share their assumptions, and might be having the worst day of their lives &#8212; and still find a way to be heard, to be trusted, to be persuasive. Not by overpowering people with information, but by meeting them where they are.</p><p>That&#8217;s not a skill AI can replicate, because it&#8217;s not a skill that lives in information. Maybe it wasn&#8217;t. But because it forced you to confront something that the circuit debater, performing for a trained judge with a published paradigm, never has to face: the raw, unfiltered unpredictability of another human mind.</p><p>And if you think about it, you already live in this world. You just don&#8217;t think of it this way yet.  You want college admissions criteria to be clear &#8212; GPA, test scores, extracurriculars &#8212; because clear criteria feel fair. But the clearer and more standardized those criteria become, the easier they are to automate. An AI can already write a flawless college essay. It can optimize an application to hit every keyword an algorithm scans for. If admissions were purely a rubric, AI would get admitted. The reason it isn&#8217;t &#8212; the reason human admissions officers still exist &#8212; is precisely because the process is messy, subjective, and human. They&#8217;re reading for voice. They&#8217;re sensing authenticity. They&#8217;re making judgments that can&#8217;t be reduced to a checklist. They want to know how you as a human will interact with other humans on campus.</p><p>Job interviews work the same way. You might wish the hiring process were standardized &#8212; clear qualifications, objective scoring, transparent criteria. And sure, that would feel fairer. But in a world where AI can master any standardized skill set, the more legible the rubric, the more replaceable you become. What makes you irreplaceable is exactly what makes a lay judge unpredictable: the human stuff. The ability to connect, to read a room, to make someone trust you in ways they can&#8217;t fully articulate. We are living in a world where anything that can be even quasi-automated will be automated. The only durable advantage is the thing that can&#8217;t be.</p><p>The students who learn to thrive in that environment &#8212; who develop the flexibility, the empathy, the communicative range to persuade people who don&#8217;t already agree with them, who don&#8217;t already speak their language &#8212; those students are building the skill set that will matter most in a world where AI handles the rest.</p><p>The future doesn&#8217;t belong to the person who can best master content that a machine can generate. It belongs to the person who can sit across from another human being &#8212; messy, unpredictable, gloriously irrational &#8212; and make a genuine connection.</p><p><strong>The lay judge isn&#8217;t the problem.
